Abstract

High molecular weight polycarbonates produced from one or more aromatic dihydroxy compounds alone or in admixture with one or more saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dihydroxy compounds are used as electrical insulating materials. The polycarbonates may contain fillers (e.g. kaolin, talcum, glass or mica), plasticizers (e.g. esters of phthalic or phosphoric acid) or pigments. The Specification lists many examples of aromatic dihydroxy compounds (especially di-(monohydroxyaryl)-alkanes) and aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dihydroxy compounds (including alkylene, oxy-or thio-alkylene, aromatic and cycloaliphatic glycols). The polycarbonates may be (a) moulded into blocks into which conductors, condensers and valves may be inserted; (h) made into films or fibres to be used for winding or covering electrical conductors; (c) made into films to be used as dielectrics in electrical condensers; (d) coated on to electrical conductors directly from a solution or melt; or (e) used to impregnate paper, woven materials, glass fibres or glass mats to be used as insulating material. The electrical properties are improved by heating the polycarbonate below its melting point. Specification 772,627 is referred to.
