Abstract
800,734. Batteries. BRENNAN, J. B. July 19, 1955, No. 20875/55. Class 53. A storage battery electrode comprises active material 4 contained within at least one pocket defined by dielectric material 1 carrying a porous metallic layer 3 in contact with the active material. The dielectric material may be a woven cloth of glass, nylon, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polythene, tetrafluorethylene or quartz filaments which is lined with porous metal, e.g. Pb, Ni, Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd or " Monel " (Registered Trade Mark) by spraying or sintering or it may be a mat of glass fibres each sheathed with metal, the fibres being bonded together by fusion of the sheaths. In the latter case the additional porous metal lining may be dispensed with. Alternatively the dielectric material may be sprayed or sintered layers of plastic material reinforced with threads inert to the electrolyte. The adjacent parts of the electrode sheathing are joined with adhesive and the sheathing may be stitched with metal or metal-sheathed dielectric threads to retain the electrode shape. A plastic dielectric framework 6, 7 is mounted on either side of the electrode and the frameworks are welded together through holes 2 in the adjacent parts of the electrode sheathing. A thermoplastic battery casing may be cured about an electrode assembly so as to compress the electrodes or the battery casing may be cemented around the electrode assembly which is clamped under pressure. The terminal of the electrode may be an extension of the porous metallic layer impregnated with polystyrene or a porous copper tag fused to the porous metallic layer and impregnated with polystyrene. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 747,962.
