Abstract
Polyethylene surfaces, e.g. films or coatings, sheets, tubes and moulded articles, maintained at a temperature not less than 50 DEG C. and exposed to ozone have improved bonding properties, particularly to printing inks. Ozonized air, containing 3 to 8 per cent ozone, obtained for example by passing air through a silent electric discharge may be used, and the polyethylene heated, preferably not above softening temperature either before or simultaneously with the exposure. In an example a film of polyethylene is passed continuously downward through valves in a chamber heated by infrared rays through glass panels, while ozonized air at 80 DEG C. is passed upwards. The film is then cooled on rollers and printed with gravure type ink. Specifications 738,474 and 758,461 are referred to.
