Abstract

The surface bonding properties for printing inks and other materials of a drawn and heat-set polyethylene terephthalate film or other article are improved by applying a flame to the surface for a time that is insufficient to cause distortion of the film &c. In the example, a film of polyethylene terephthalate 0.0005 inch thick is produced by melt extrusion into water followed by drawing the quenched film at 80 DEG C., both longitudinally and laterally, and heat-setting the drawn film by raising its temperature to 180 DEG C. without allowing it to shrink. The tip of a Bunsen burner flame 2-3 inches long is played over this film while it is supported on a cold backing roller so that the flame at any instant covers 0.5 square inch of film and is moved over the film at such a rate that 24 square inches of surface are treated per second.
