Abstract

800,433. Indicating liquid levels. HUBER, A. Oct. 13, 1955, No. 29185/55. Class 123(1) In a liquid level indicator, particularly for the fuel tank of a motor vehicle, a casing consisting of two flanged members 13, 17 is sealed into an aperture in the top of the tank 11, a riser tube 15 extending from the lower member 13 to near the bottom of the tank whilst the upper member 17 has an internal projection 19 extending downwardly inside the chamber 18 formed within the casing to a position a small distance above the riser tube. The projection 19 has an internal bore 20 with which communicates a suction line 21 from the engine of the vehicle. From the top of the chamber 18 a duct 22 and a pipe 23 lead to a pressure guage 24 mounted, for example, on the vehicle dashboard, the pipe 23 being closed by a porous plug 27. When the engine is started, fuel is drawn up through the tube 15, air leaking through the plug 27 and entering the chamber 18. ensuring that the fuel rises only to the bottom of the projection 19. The pressure in the chamber which is indicated by the guage is then less than atmospheric by the head A of liquid, the gauge being calibrated to indicate directly the level or volume of the fuel in the tank 11. To prevent the liquid in the riser tube from dropping when no suction acts in the chamber 18, a one-way valve composed of a plate 30 seating on a ring 33 is provided in the chamber, a float 34 in the riser tube acting to aid the opening of the valve when the engine is started. Perforated baffle plates 38, 39 prevent liquid splashing into the pipe 23.
