Abstract

800,097. Fabrics coated with polyvinyl chloride. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., KNOWLES, E., and MEYRICK, T. J. Aug. 15, 1956 [Sept. 9, 1955], No. 25832/55. Class 140. Textile materials, e.g. cellulose esters, regenerated cellulose, glass fibres, synthetic materials such as nylon, polyacrylonitrile or polyesters such as polyethylene terphthalate, which may be in any form, e.g. fibres, yarns, filaments, fabrics and the like, are coated with a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and an organic polyisocyanate prior to coating with polyvinyl chloride. The copolymer, which may contain from 2 to 15 per cent by weight vinyl acetate, and the polyisocyanate may be applied in separate or as a combined solution in organic liquids, e.g. ethyl acetate, ethylene dichloride, acetone, cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone, nitroethane, tetrahydrofurane or mixtures thereof which may contain 5 to 30 per cent by weight of the textile material of the copolymer, and 5 to 50 per cent by weight of the copolymer of the polyisocyanate. Plasticizers which may be added to the copolymer are dioctyl, dinonyl or. dibutyl phthalate, trieresyl phosphate, or polymeric plasticizers such as polypropylene adipate/laurate, sebacate or adipate. The coated material may be dried to remove the organic solvent and baked at 160‹ to 180‹ C. prior to coating with polyvinyl chloride. The polyvinyl chloride may be applied as a paste containing 45 to 55 per cent by weight of polymer, and heated to gell the polymer. Polyisocyanates specified are ethylene diisocyanate, diphenylmethane diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate, mphenylene diisocyanate, toluylene 2.4-diisocyanate, toluene 2.4.6-triisocyanate and triphenylmethane 4.4<SP>1</SP>.4<SP>11</SP>-triinocyanate.
