Abstract

800,005. Measuring flow rate. SOUTHERN UNITED TELEPHONE CABLES, Ltd. July 6, 1956 [July 6, 1955], No. 19535/55. Class 69(1). A system for measuring low rates of flow of fluid comprises a flow-meter, a fine control valve, a connection between the inlet side of the meter and a source of fluid pressure, a connection between the outlet side of the meter and the fine control valve, the outlet of which is open to the atmosphere or is connected to a low pressure part of the system and a connection between the outlet side of the meter and a receiver. As shown applied to apparatus for finding the position of a leak in a sheathed cable, high-pressure gas from a cylinder 1 is passed through an air filter 2, a pressure regulator 3 and a main stopcock 4 to a cable 5. Two Rotameters R and R2 are connected in parallel across the stop-cock 4 and a stop-cock 9 followed by a Rotameter R3 and a fine control valve 10 are connected to a branch in the line from the main stop-cock to the cable. An apparatus as above is connected to each end of a cable which is leaking and when a steady state has been reached at both ends of the cable, the cock 9 and fine control valve 10 are adjusted to give a clear reading on Rotameter R3. The required flow rate is the difference between the readings of Rotameters R2 and R3. Rotameter R1 has a different scale range from that of R2 and is used if the conditions are more suitable to the use of that scale. The distance of the leak from either end of the cable may be calculated from the flow rates. Rotameter R3 may be dispensed with, the fine control valve being set to a predetermined flow rate and the difference between that flow and the flow shown by R2 with the cable in the circuit giving the required flow rate.
