Abstract

799,971. Thermal switches. TRIGGS, W. W. (Kidde & Co., Inc., W.). Aug. 7, 1956, No. 24143/56. Class 38 (5). In a thermostatic switch that is sensitive to small departures from a normal high operating temperature (for example, 1000‹ F.) of the apparatus controlled, means are provided for preheating the thermostat to or near its operating temperature so that it may be ready for instant operation, if necessary. As shown, the expansible tube 14 of a differentiallyexpanding rod-and-tick thermostat has a heating coil 100, the ends 102, 104 of which are led out through hollow binding posts. The rod 20 is of ceramic or other very low expansion material and co-operates with an L-shaped member 50 pivoted on a pin 48 between lugs 42, 44 of the casing and biased clockwise (Fig. 1) by a wire spring 52. A movable contact 64 is pivoted on a pin 62 in a slot in member 50 and biased anticlockwise by a wire spring 68. At normal operating temperature, contact 64 lies out of contact with fixed contacts 82, 84, but at lower temperatures the rod 28 moves upwards and rotates member 50 so that contact 64 engages contact 82 and causes the heater 100 to be energized. At higher temperatures, the rod descends and spring 52 rotates member 50 so that contact 64 engages contact 84 to sound an alarm or disconnect the plant. As applied to a jet engine where the operating temperature is reached soon after starting up, the coil 100 is switched in in advance in case of malefunctioning of the engine.
