Abstract

A therapeutic composition comprises a vehicle suitable for topical application, e.g. vanishing cream, ointment base, emulsion, aqueous or oil-suspension or solution, jellies, dusting powder, aerosol or lotion, an anti-biotic or a sulphonamide, and a 9a -fluoro-11-(keto or hydroxyl)- D 4-pregnene-17 a -ol-3,20-dione having at least one of the hydrogen atoms at the 21-position replaced by a hydroxy, oxo, ester or alkali metal bisulphite group. The pregnene compound may be present from at least 0.01 per cent by weight of the composition. Specified pregnene compounds are 9a -fluorohydrocortisone aldehyde, 9a -fluoro-cortisone aldehyde, 9a - fluoro hydrocortisone, 9a -fluoro cortisone and their 21-esters such as those of alkanoic acids containing not more than six carbon atoms, e.g. acetic, propionic, t-butylacetic, trimethylacetic and tricarballylic acids, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, long chain aliphatic acids, e.g. palmitic, stearic acids, inorganic acids, e.g. phosphoric acid and the salts of the phosphate ester. Suitable antibiotics are penicillin, procaine penicillin, streptomycin, bacitracin, neomycin, aureomycin, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol and polymixin. Other adrenal harmones, e.g. cartisone and hydrocortisone, may also be present. Substances which may comprise the vehicle are polyethylene glycols, olive oil, petrolatum, hydrous and anhydrous waxfat, starch, collodion, zinc oxide, talc, zinc stearate, glycerol, soap, mineral oils, cocoa butter, white wax, sodium chloride, citrate and phosphate, benzyl alcohol, polyoxyethylene derivatives of sorbitan monooleate, benzalkonium chloride, partially sulphated cetyl and stearyl alcohols, glyceryl monostearate, lanolin, methyl-p-hydroxy-benzoate, N - propyl - p - hydroxybenzoate, isopropanol, diethylene glycol stearate, cetyl alcohol, stearic acid, sodium lauryl sulphate, triethanolamine, propylene glycol, ethyl alcohol and water.
