Abstract

A dental composition comprises a carrier which is an ointment suitable for application to the gingival tissues, toothpaste, dental powders, or a denture adhesive, and a D 4-pregnene-11b , 17a -diol-3,20-dione having at least one of the hydrogen atoms at the 21 position replaced by an hydroxy, oxo or ester group. The active ingredient may be present from 0.05 to 25 per cent by weight of the composition but it is preferred that ointments should contain from 1 to 2.5 per cent and the other forms from 0.1 to 0.5 per cent by weight. Specified active ingredients are hydrocortisone aldehyde (D 4-pregnene - 11b ,17a - diol - 21 - al - 3,20 - dione), hydrocortisone (D 4 - pregnene - 11b ,17a ,21 - triol - 3,20 - dione), hydrocortisone alkanoates such as hydrocortisone acetate (D 4-pregnene-11b ,17a ,21 - triol - 3,20 - dione - 21 - acetate) and D 4 - pregnene - 11b ,17a ,21 - triol - 3,20 - dione - 21 - tertiary butyl acetate, D 4 - pregnene - 11b ,17a ,21 - triol - 3,20 - dione - 21 - propionate, D 4 - pregnene - 11b ,17a ,21 - triol - 3,20 - dione - 21 - benzoate, D 4 - pregnene-11b ,17a ,21 - triol - 3,20 - dione - 21 - tricarballylate. Substances which may comprise the carrier are polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, white wax, petrolatum karaya gum, tragacanth, carboxymethylcellulose, glycerine, mineral oils, soaps, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, saccharin, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, alcohol, surface-active and flavouring agents.
