Abstract

A veterinary composition for topical application comprises glycyrrhetinic acid or a salt or ester thereof dissolved or dispersed in an inert carrier base in the form of an emulsion, lotion, pessary base, or powder. The composition is advantageous in the treatment of inflammatory diseases in animals. The incorporation of an enzyme, such as trypsin or papain, assists in eliminating tissue debris. Examples disclose the use of glycyrrhetinic acid in (1) a dispersion in cocoa butter to form a pessary; (2) a lotion comprising a dispersion of polyethylene glycol and ethyl cellulose in distilled water.
