Abstract
799,375. Change-speed gear; friction clutches. PAPST, H. June 2, 1955 [June 5, 1954], No. 15811/55. Class 80 (2). Toothed wheels 7, free and axially movable on a driving or driven shaft 1, and meshing wheels fast on a parallel driven or driving shaft, are frictionally and selectively clutchable thereto to vary the speed ratio, by air or liquid pressure applied to cylindrical spaces 10 formed between the wheel 7 and pistons 2 fast both axially and in rotation with the shaft, and having also friction faces 8 for clutch engagement with the adjacent face of the next smaller wheel 7. The largest wheel 7 clutches at 8 a fast end disc 2 not formed as a piston. Seal rings 11 are provided and pressure is directed selectively to the cylinders 10 by an axially slidable fitting 16 having a pressure inlet 17 and feeding through shaft passages 13. In Fig. 1 the pistons 2 are secured to the shaft by an end nut 6 clamping through spacers 4 on which run the wheels 7. In Fig. 2, not shown, the pistons 2 are secured by radial set screws, the wheels 7 run directly on the shaft, and an additional end piston is provided for actuating a brake disc.
