Abstract
The invention relates to the salts of tetracycline with the following organic acids ascorbic, acetic, succinic, benzoic, nicotinic, formic and maleic acids. Acid and metal salts of tetracycline are produced by cultivating Streptomyces vividifaciens ATCC 11989 in an aqueous nitrogenous nutrient containing carbohydrate solution under submerged aerobic conditions until substantial antibacterial activity is imparted to the solution, recovering the resulting tetracycline by extraction at pH 8 to 9 and preferably 8.5 with butanol, separating the butanol extract, precipitating the tetracycline base by the addition of petroleum ether to the butanol extract and reacting the base with an acid or metal hydroxide. The hydrochloride is produced by concentrating the butanol extract by azeotropic distillation and passing in hydrogen chloride gas. Specification 770,065 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 747,779.ALSO:A medicine comprises an aqueous solution of one of the following salts of tetracycline: the hydrochloride, ascorbate, acetate, succinate, benzoate, nicotinate, formate, and maleate.
