Abstract
799,008. Electrically heated cutters. WARDRAY & CO., Ltd. Dec. 12, 1955 [Dec. 10, 1954], No. 35870/54. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXVI] A cutter 47 for removing insulation from cables comprises a thin metal strip heated by passing a low voltage current therethrough from the secondary 30 of a transformer 24 in a casing 13 carrying the cutter. The secondary 30 is a stranded cable with ends 31 passing in grooves in the underside of a porcelain block 35 with bosses 36 apertured to carry metal pillars 33 having lower diametral holes in which the secondary ends 31 are soldered to prevent rotation of the pillars. The cutter 47 comprises a straight or upwardly arched strip of nickel chromium alloy with its ends brazed in slots in metal collars 50 attached by screws 54 to the tops of the pillars 33. Angle brackets 52 are attached to the collars and are spaced from the cutter 47 so that a cable may be pressed lengthwise on to the upper blunt cutting edge of the cutter to split its insulation; or the cable may be applied transversely to the cutter to form a circular groove in its insulation. The cutter may be notched or slotted or shaped to engage round the conductor as the insulation softens and may be attached interchangeable to the pillars. The edge of the cutter may be rounded.
