Abstract
798,613. Making turbine rotors; joining by forging. I.T.E. CIRCUIT BREAKER CO. May 2, 1956 [May 6, 1955], No. 13590/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). An element 10 is secured in the surface of a body 12 by providing in the body a groove 13 to receive the element, and an adjacent auxiliary groove 14, forming an enlargement 11 in the edge of the element, inserting the enlargement in its groove 13, Fig. 1b, and deforming the material of the body lying between the grooves to close the mouth of the groove 13 and lock the element therein, Fig. 1c. The element 10 may be a turbine blade to be secured in a rotor 12. Two auxiliary grooves 14, 15 may be provided on opposite sides of the groove 13 thereby forming intermediate ribs of metal which are deformed to overlie the enlarged blade root 11. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), only one auxiliary groove is provided. Both the blade and the surface of the rotor may be of irregular shape, Fig. 2 (not shown). The blade width may be smaller than the axial width of the rotor. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3b, a hollow cylinder 16 having an enlarged edge 17 formed by peening or bending over is secured in an annular groove 18 in a body 19 and a concentric auxiliary groove 20 is provided to facilitate deformation of the surface of the body to overlie the enlargement ; an inner auxiliary groove may also be provided.
