Abstract

798,527. Dies for extruding tyre tread bands &c. PIRELLI SOC. PER AZIONI. April. 9, 1956 [April 9, 1955], No. 10765/56. Class 87(2). An extrusion die is so designed that the resistance to flow of plastic material as it is forced through the die, by the surfaces of the orifice of the die, varies from point to point across the orifice with the height dimension of the orifice in the sense that the greater the height dimension from side to side of the orifice the greater the resistance to flow and vice-versa. In a die for extruding a tyre tread band, Figs. 5 and 6, L3, Fig. 6, represents the length dimension of the orifice at the portion 4, which has a height dimension h3. The two side portion 5 of the orifice decrease in height and length dimension in the direction away from the central portion, the minimum length dimension L6 being the minimum thickness of material capable of withstanding the extrusion pressure. The design of orifice is governed by the empirical formula where L<SP>1</SP> and L<SP>2</SP> are the greater and less length dimensions at two transversely spaced points, h<SP>1</SP> and h<SP>2</SP> are the corresponding height dimensions and n is a constant appropriate to the material being extruded. A deflector 6, opposite the central portion of the die and directed upstream, ensures continuous flow of the whole of the plastic material to the orifice. Fig.4 shows a die which tapers at 2 on one side of the orifice according to the above relationship; also means for varying the length dimension of the orifice in the form of a recess 3 on the downstream side. In a modification, a projection on the downstream side of the orifice may combine with a recess to provide in conjunction with the surfaces of the orifice proper, the required variation in length dimension, the passage of the material through those parts of the orifice of reduced height dimension being braked by the recess and the projection as it flows unhindered from the orifice. Specification 661,556 is referred to.
