798,414. Hydraulic pit props. HUNT & MITTON, Ltd., and JAGER, E. G. Oct. 21, 1955 [Oct. 28, 1954], No. 31100/54. Class 20(2) [Also in Groups XXIX and XXX] A valve assembly for controlling the operation in sequence of a plurality of hydraulic pit props 11 for supporting a coal-mine roof adjacent to a coal-cutting machine and moving a conveyer belt 12 and moving themselves, comprises a number of piston valves 30 operated by cams 40 on a. shaft 39, the heads of the valves being exposed to the pressure in the inlet manifold 18 to hold them against the cams. The valve units 15, 16 are connected to opposite sides of double-acting horizontal rams 50, 50a, Fig. 3 connected to the conveyer belt 12 and the unit 17 with the lower ends of single-acting pit-props 11. In operation, to move the equipment sideways, the shaft 39 is first rotated to a position to move the cam associated with the valve unit 17 so that this valve is urged upwardly by inlet pressure to connect the inlet manifold 18 to the lower ends of the pit props 11, which then move upwardly to support the roof. The shaft 39 is then rotated so that the valve unit 16 moves to supply pressure liquid to extend the rams 50, 50a to move the conveyer belt sideways. Then the shaft 39 is next rotated to a position in which the unit 17 connects the pit props 11 to exhaust, which then fall under gravity and finally to a position to .operate the valve unit 15 to retract the rams 50, 50a. Since the units on which the pit props 11 are mounted are lighter in weight than the conveyer belt and provided with suitable skids these units will on retraction of the rams 50, 50a move towards the conveyer belt. A non-return valve 53 may be fitted in the line between the unit 17 and the pit props 11 to prevent return flow in the event of excessive roof pressure. In these circumstances a spring- loaded, loose-ball valve 43 is fitted, the valve being unseated by means of a cam 44, roller 34a and a rod 57 to connect the pit props 11 to exhaust to enable them to be lowered.
