Abstract

<PICT:0798333/III/1> A heat- and sound-insulating coating, e.g. on a wall or ceiling, is produced by spraying on to the surface a fibre, e.g. asbestos, with a liquid which is or reacts to form an adhesive and pressing the coating with a tool having irregularly spaced blunt projections so as to produce a stippled or random pattern on the surface. Such a coating may also be produced by applying a first layer of fibre and adhesive, pressing either with a flat tool or board or with the tool described, and then applying a relatively thin layer of finer fibre and adhesive and again pressing with the tool described. As shown, the tool comprises a moulded plastic sheet 3, having irregularly-spaced blunt projections 5, secured by screws 4 to a wooden board 1, provided with a handle 2. The plastic sheet may be made by making tapered cavities in a dish-shaped mould, filling with a cold-setting polyester resin, introducing a reinforcing sheet of asbestos-fabric or glass-fabric, placing a flat mould part on top and maintaining under pressure until the resin has set. Alternatively, the tool may be made by fastening lead shot or rivet heads to a wooden or metal float or by driving round-headed nails into a piece of wood. The linear dimensions of the projections may be from 1/16 to 3/8 inch and the average spacing between them 3/8 to 1 inch. According to the Provisional Specification, the tool can also be made by sticking ball-bearings, which may be of different sizes, to a wooden float by an adhesive.
