Abstract

An article formed of a structural material is provided with a surface layer by coating a former with a mixture of an unsaturated polyester, a vinyl aromatic compound, glass fibres of length not greater than 3 mm. and a catalyst, allowing the mixture to gell, contacting the former with the structural material and curing the coating in contact therewith, the coating then being separated from the former with the article and adhering thereto. The structural materials specified are glass fibre reinforced resins, e.g. laminates, wherein the resin may be of the polyester, epoxy or phenolic type; glass fabric impregnated with catalysed polyester resin (Example (2)); and fibrous materials such as wood and agglomerated wood chips, wood fibres, sawdust or asbestos fibre cement, the latter optionally being moistened with catalysed polyester. The formers used are moulding dies or carriers, e.g. flat plates, and may be of metal or glass. Polyesters disclosed are derived from maleic and fumaric acids or anhydrides and may be modified with materials such as stearic, adipic phthalic or sebacic acid, allyl or decyl alcohol, or linseed oil fatty acids. The aromatic monomer may be styrene or divinyl benzene. Benzoyl or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide may be used as catalyst, optionally in conjunction with accelerators such as cobalt naphthenate and diethylaniline and inhibitors such as a -naphthol and hydroquinone. If desired the glass fibres may be in the form of a mat, fabric or roving. Other optional ingredients are pigments, dyes and fillers such as wood meal, asbestos fibre, clay, mica, talc, calcium carbonate, kaolin, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Flat panels for decorative purposes may be obtained and, if required, additional coatings of nitrocellulose or baking varnishes may also be applied.
