Abstract

<FORM:0798221/III/1> <FORM:0798221/III/2> In a high vacuum distillation apparatus, particularly for molecular distillation, comprising a vacuum chamber 1 having a rotatably mounted shaft 8 carrying heated discs 12a, 12b and 12c which are heated to different temperatures relative to one another as described below, which partly dip into the distilland and which form vaporizing surfaces for the film of distilland formed thereon and condensers disposed between the discs, there are disposed between at least one pair of discs two separate condensers, e.g. 23 and 24, with separate systems for collecting the condensate from each condenser. The distilland enters the sump through pipe 5 and residues leave by exit 21. The sump is preferably divided into compartments by weirs 44 and partition walls 45 in the same plane as each disc. The discs 12 are heated by passing a heating fluid from the reservoir 15 through tube 13, through holes 18 and through each disc in the order 12c to 12a, the liquid being deflected through the discs by baffles 19. The liquid discharged from disc 12a returns to the reservoir 15 by tube 20. In operation the chamber 1 is evacuated by suction applied at pipe 3. The shaft 8 is rotated and the discs, assisted by cups 43, pick up thin films of distilland which evaporate from the discs and the vapours condense on the adjacent condensers. The condensates are collected separately in collecting troughs and delivered to the separate collectors 40a, 40b, 40c, 40d, 40e and 40f. The condensers may be cooled to different temperatures, if desired, either by having separate cooling systems for each condenser or by having a single cooling fluid which is cooled or heated between each condenser. Also the two sides of any disc may be heated to the same temperature by using a perforated baffle in which case the condensates from the two adjacent condensers, e.g. 22 and 23, may be led to a common discharge pipe and collected together.
