Abstract

798,024. Fishing reels. MORRITT, K. P. July 19, 1956 [Oct. 20, 1955], No. 30005/55. Class 48. In a fishing reel of the kind wherein the line is wound on to a reciprocating spool 33 by a pick-up 32 mounted on a rotatable casing 30, the driving gear comprises a crown-wheel 2, Fig. 2, having a cam track 40 adapted to drive an axially reciprocable shaft 6, the shaft 4 of the crown-wheel passing through the housing 8 of the reel and the reciprocable shaft 6 terminating short of the crown-wheel shaft 4. A winding handle is detachably secured by a screw to either end of the crown-wheel shaft 4. The reciprocable shaft 6 is slidably mounted in a housing 38 and has a pin 34 which projects through a slot 36 in the housing 38 to engage the cam track 40 in the crown-wheel 2. The pick-up casing 30 is rotatable on the reciprocable shaft 6 and has a bevel gear 28 meshing with the crown-wheel 2. The spool 33 is held on the reciprocable shaft 6 by a threaded member 50. A floating spring-loaded pawl 58, Fig. 3, mounted on the underface of the spool engages a ratchet wheel 46 keyed to the reciprocating-shaft 6 and is pivoted to a plunger 60 which projects through a peripheral flange on the spool and has a slot adapted to receive the loose end of the line so that the line is gripped against the peripheral spool flange. The line is released by rotating the spool slightly in the direction to cause the pawl to lock with the ratchet wheel 46 and move. the plunger proud of the peripheral flange. The wire pick-up 32 has two turned-in ends 52, 54, which pass through holes in the pick-up casing 30, one end 52 serving merely as a pivot, the other end 54 extending inwardly and being deformed by a projection 56 on the casing to spring load the pick-up. The pick-up is restricted to 90 degrees rotation and one extreme position, used for casting, is just past the dead-centre position of the spring loading. On rotation of the pick-up casing 30 the pick-up strikes a stop on the reel bracket and automatically returns to the linewinding position. A spring-urged pawl 10, Fig. 2, pivoted on the inner face of the reel housing 8 engages the teeth of the crown-wheel 2 to allow the wheel to be rotated in the winding- in direction only and a pivoted lever 16, Fig. 1, has a recessed portion 20 which engages a pin 22 on the pawl 10, whereby manual rotation of the lever moves the pawl out of engagement with the crown-wheel. Specifications 798,025 and 798,026 are referred to.
