Abstract
797,881. Lifting devices for engaging articles. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 29, 1956 [March 15, 1955], No. 7602/55. Class 78 (4). Claws 20 carried by a resilient membrane 19 are moved to engage a load when the membrane is moved between the position shown in full and broken lines by admitting fluid under pressure to a chamber 17 the pressure in which is normally lower than the ambient pressure. As shown, the diaphragm 19 is relieved of the load on the claws 20 by engagement with portions 21b, 21c of the claws 20 with an annular portion 23 of the member 24 which also provides a seat for a valve 26 serving to indicate when the gripping device is operated, and transmits a motion to a valve member 30 providing a remote indication if the device is overloaded. The valve 26 is carried by a member 25 secured to the diaphragm 19 and serves, when the gripper is operated, to permit fluid to pass from the chamber 17 through a bore 27 and a tube 29 to a remote flow-indicator indicating the operation of the device. The valve member 30 is integral with the member 24 and is mounted on the casing 11 of the device through a bellows 14 so that it can be moved downwardly by an excessive load on the claws 20. Downward movement of the member 30 causes a spherical seat 12a on the casing to obturate passages 35 by which fluid carried to the bellows 14 by a pipe 38 can pass to a bore 32 leading to an outlet pipe 31 communicating with a remote flow-indicator which thus provides an indication of overloading. The pipe 28 serving the chamber 17 and the outlet pipe 29 are coiled to permit the movement of the member 30, 24. The claws 20 are preferably formed in two portions brazed to opposite sides of the diaphragm 19. The portion of the diaphragm receiving each claw, and the portion of the diaphragm receiving the valve member 25, may be dished and one part of each claw 20 may have a projection passing through a hole in the diaphragm 19 to be received by a socket in the portion of the claw on the opposite side of the diaphragm.
