Abstract
797,778. Valves. HALLSTRON, O. H. May 29, 1956, No. 16560/56. Class 135. [Also in Group XXVIII] Each connector 4, Fig. 1, which opens at one end into a central suction duct, not shown, consists of a tapering socket 5 surrounded by a flanged collar on which is hinged a lid 1 embodying a freely mounted insert 6 of either flexible material, such as rubber, or metal; the insert is retained in the lid by an annular ring 7, a number of circumferentially located parts, springs or wires (not shown). Sealing of the socket 5 is effected by suction drawing the insert on to the end thereof. The insert may be suspended by a pair of diametrically disposed pivots 9 mounted in slots 10 in the lid 1, such a suspension facilitating a tilting as well as an axial movement of the insert. Upon removing the suction hose from the socket 5 the lid assembly falls by gravity and the insert seals the socket. A protrusion 11 on the lid interior holds the insert 6 against the socket mouth so that even weak suction effects a satisfactory seal between those parts. The suction hose may engage a larger area socket 4b, and if the socket 5 is removed or reduced in length the insert 6 is provided with a sealing lip 6a. In a modification, the lid is positioned flush with a floor surface and in order to relieve pressure on the insert in the event of the lid being trodden-on, the lid is formed with lips which rest on an annular gasket in the socket flange. The lid hinge is mounted in a ring adjustably fitted in the socket flange which latter may have lugs to enable it to be secured to the floor; the lid is hinged so that it always tends to close. In another modification, the socket is inserted into the elbow and held therein by screws to enable the connector to be vertically mounted on a wall, the elbow and socket flanges being on opposite sides of the wall; the other end of the elbow is inserted into a vertical pipe and secured thereto by a stop screw.
