Abstract

797,749. Laminates. CABLE BELT, Ltd. March 14, 1957 [Dec. 19, 1955], No. 36360/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. [Also in Group XXX] A conveyer belt for an endless belt conveyer of the kind in which the belt is supported on a pair of endless driving cables consists of a core of flexible substantially flameproof elastomeric material compounded to give a low mechanical strength in which a series of spaced cross straps in the form of metal rods are embedded, and an outer envelope formed in one or more layers of elastomeric material which is both substantially flameproof and compounded to give high mechanical strength, the core and envelope being bonded together to form a unitary belt structure. Cable-engaging means in the form of extruded grooved strips are provided near the edges of the belt so as to lie adjacent the ends of the cross straps. A reinforcing layer of textile fabric may be included between the outer envelope and the core, this being coated with a composition similar to that used for the envelope, but where an inherently flameproof elastomer, e.g. Neoprene or polyvinyl chloride, is used for the envelope the coating for the reinforcing layer may include some natural rubber. In a typical example given, Neoprene is used for the envelope together with small quantities of flameproofing agents and a high proportion of high abrasion furnace black, a similar composition but with a small proportion of natural rubber is used for an inner layer and the cable-engaging strips, a composition of generally similar form but with a larger proportion of rubber and using semi-reinforcing furnace black in place of the high abrasion furnace black is used for the fabric reinforcement layer, and a composition consisting mainly of natural rubber, whiting and china clay, with chlorinated paraffin and zinc borate as flame-proofing agents is used for the core. Other examples are given using either polyvinyl chloride as an inherently flameproofing elastomer or natural rubber together with large proportions of chlorinated naphthalene in conjunction with antimony trioxide for flameproofing, or combinations of these. Specification 711,524, [Group XXX], is referred to.
