Abstract
Petroleum hydrocarbons boiling in the range 275-430 DEG F. are desulphurized by contacting with a catalyst in the presence of 250-2000 cubic feet of hydrogen per barrel of feedstock, and 0.1-10 mol. per cent of added hydrogen sulphide, at a temperature of 500-750 DEG F. (Tr), a space velocity of 1-16 v./v./hr., a pressure of 50-300 p.s.i.g. and a hydrogen partial pressure of 50-150 p.s.i.a. The reaction conditions should satisfy the equation M = 17.8 + 0.43 (v./v./hr.) + 1.3 (per cent H2S) - 0.03 (Tr), where M is 0.1-10. Catalysts specified are oxides and sulphides of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo and W, and the oxides of platinum and palladium; examples given are cobalt molybdate, cobalt sulphide, molybdenum oxide, nickel sulphide and tin sulphide. The catalysts may be supported on a carrier such as alumina, magnesia, silica, zinc oxide and kieselguhr. The catalyst may be employed as a fixed bed or a fluidized bed. The hydrogen used may be mixed with inert gas; hydrogen not consumed in the process may be recycled. Prior to recycling the gaseous products, all or some of the hydrogen sulphide may be removed by a scrubber such as an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution, e.g. sodium hydroxide. The hydrogen sulphide used may be that normally present in the hydrogen-containing gas or may be added separately. The feedstock may be a virgin naphtha or a thermally or catalytically cracked naphtha derived from the cracking of a crude oil or a fraction thereof.
