Class 97(1) A variable focal length objective system giving a continuous range of focal lengths comprises a variable afocal system and two interchangeable basic objectives mounted to be selectively aligned with the afocal system so that the distance between the image plane and front vertex of each basic objective is substantially the same, the focal lengths of the basic objectives being in the ratio 1 : #n where n is the ratio of the extreme focal lengths of the desired focal length range. As described the afocal system consists of two fixed positive lenses. Spaced apart with a negative lens axially movable therebetween, the basic objectives consisting of two lenses.
