Abstract

797,552. Supplying liquid fuel to burners CHRYSLER CORPORATION. Sept. 27. 1955, No. 27530/55. Class 75(1) [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] Fluid flow control apparatus such as a fuel supply system for a gas turbine engine consists of a principal fuel pump 43 feeding fuel from a metering device 10 through a conduit 48 to spill nozzles 132 the return line 130 from which passes through'a cooler 128 and thence to ports 116 in a sleeve containing a slidable valve member 70 having ports 110 which coact with the ports 116, and ports 104 coacting with ports 102 in the sleeve which communicate through a passage 92 with a discharge conduit 84 from one or more secondary pumps 44. The interior of the valve member 70 communicates through a passage 80, 78 with the inlets to the pumps 43, 44. The conduits 84, 48 communicate with each other through a check valve 88 which is closed by pressure in the conduit 48 when the pump 43 is working normally. The valve member 70, due to its connection 78 with the inlets to the pumps and to a connection 124 with the inlet to the metering device 10, is movable in response to the pressure difference across the metering device. Thus, e.g. if the pressure drop across the metering device increases, the valve member 70 moves downwardly to increase the opening of the ports 110 and thereby reduce the amount of fuel discharged at the nozzles. During normal operation the pump 44 discharges back to the inlet through the open ports 104. Should the pump 43 fail the pressure on its upstream side will tend to increase thereby causing upward movement of the valve member 70 to close the ports 104 whereby the pump 44 is caused to discharge into the conduit 48 to supply the nozzles, the ports 110, 116 remaining partially open for controlling the return flow. The metering device 10 is fed with fuel by a booster pump 38 and a transfer pump 39 and includes a regulating valve 11 actuated by air and fuel diaphragms, and further valves 28, 30 actuated respectively by temperature responsive means and manually. A dumping valve 142 is positioned by an overspeed governor 144 driven by the turbine.
