Abstract
797,468. Centrifugal pumps. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. May 16, 1956, No. 15317/56. Class 110 (1). [Also is Groups XXXIV and XXXV] The pump impeller 47, Fig. 1, and the rotor 46 of the driving motor are carried by a hollow shaft 44 which surrounds, with clearance, a stationary member 31. Member 31 is carried at one end in a bore 9 in a cover-plate 5 and at the other end in a bore 34 in the end of a fluidtight shroud 22 which isolates the motor stator 57 from the pumped fluid. A pin 37 extends into a groove in the member 31 to fix it. Some of the pumped fluid passes by way of an annular channel 21 and radial passages 12 to the bore 9 and thence through holes 43 in the hollow member 31 to the spaces between the shaft 44 and flat faces 39, Figs. 1 and 4, formed on the member 31. The fluid maintains the shaft 44 coaxial with, but spaced from, the member 31. The fluid leaking from the spaces returns to the impeller 47 through holes 49. The flow of fluid cools the rotor 46. Some of the pumped fluid fills annular grooves 11, 23 to prevent axial movement of the shaft 44. The rotor 46 has a fluid-tight casing 48. The stator 57 may be cooled by air, as from a blower, introduced at 63 and expelled at 64. Alternatively, cooling water may be passed through hollow stator conductors.
