Abstract

797,188. Starting. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AKT.-GES. Jan. 4, 1957 [Jan. 7, 1956], No. 429/57. Class 7(5) [Also in Group XXIV] In a timing mechanism for driving the fuel pump of an injection type internal combustion engine wherein the relative angular positions of the crankshaft and fuel pump crankshaft are determined by a centrifugal weight, the mechanism includes means operating on the weight to advance the commencement of the fuel delivery for starting purposes. A gear 4 driven from the engine crankshaft has a coupling element 6 secured by bolts 15 and carrying an adjustable slide block 12 which bears at its sloping flank 10 against the corresponding flank 8 of a centrifugal weight 1. The weight is loaded by a spring 14 and has a second flank 9 bearing on a sloping flank 11 of a second coupling element 7 having a hub 17 shrunk on a shaft 3 coupled at 2 to the fuel pump camshaft drive. The coupling elements 6, 7 are loaded by a spring 13 to bear on the weight 1 which, under centrifugal force on rotation of the coupling moves the coupling elements 6, 7 to vary the relative angular positions of the gear 4 and the shaft 3 to advance the fuel pump timing. To aid engine starting the weight 1 can be moved outwards by a pin 19 co-operating with a sloping face 27 on a slide bolt 20 moved axially through a cross-member 21, control sleeve 22, fork 23 and shart 24. The shaft 24 carries a spring-loaded arm for manual advance of the timing for starting, which arm is returned, to allow whole movement of the weight 1 by the spring when the engine is running. In a modification the weight may be moved for starting by a camming action in the drive from gear 4 to shaft 3, this action being over-ridden by engine oil pressure when the engine has started; the weight may be moved by a bellows acting through linkwork, the bellows rendering the linkwork inoperative on the attainment of a predetermined engine temperature; or the weight may be moved outwards under cold conditions by an arcuate bi-metallic strip, which contracts on the attainment of engine temperature to allow full movement of the weight.
