Abstract

797,005. Feeding webs. ADAMS POWEL EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and POWEL, W. S. April 24, 1956 [April 29, 1955], No. 12465/55. Class 100(1) [Also in Group XV] A carton taping machine comprises essentially similar upper and lower units 1, 2 adjustably spaced apart for applying adhesive tape to the upper and lower faces of cartons fed between the units, each unit having a first pair of feed rollers 13, 13<SP>1</SP> and a second pair of feed rollers 14, 14<SP>1</SP>, which may also be moistening rollers, the rollers being profiled to define bites each including a V-shaped portion and arranged so as to feed the tape vertically into the path of the cartons, and each unit including a cutter blade 42 located between the two pairs of rollers and means which upon contact with a carton initiate the feed of tape by the rollers 13, 13<SP>1</SP> and upon a carton passing out of control therewith, arrest the feed and operate the cutter blade 42 to sever the tape. Each unit has a pair of spaced endless belts 5 for feeding the cartons between guide rails 81. The tape is fed from a reel (not shown) via guide rolls 10, 11 to the feed rollers 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, 14,14<SP>1</SP> which bend the tape transversely to include a V-shaped part to make it substantially self-supporting. The roller 13<SP>1</SP> is mounted on a spindle 19 carried by arms 20 pivoted at 21 and coupled at their outer ends through levers 22, 23 to a lever 24 operable by a solenoid 25. When a carton enters between the upper and lower units, its front edge runs over a roller 35 on a spring-urged pivoted arm 36 which is depressed to operate a micro-switch 39; this energizes the solenoid 25 which moves the feed roller 13<SP>1</SP> towards the roller 13 to initiate feed, the rollers being held apart in the de-energized condition by a spring 40. Feeding continues until the solenoid is de-energized which occurs when the rear edge of the carton passes beyond a second roller 41 on the arm 36. Thus an amount of tape is automatically fed of a length greater than the length of the carton by an amount equal to the spacing of the rollers 35. 41. As soon as the solenoid is de-energized, the cutter blade 42 is driven through the tape by a lever 43 actuated on movement of the solenoid armature by a spring 40. By the time the front edge of the carton approaches a guide roller 15, the end of the moistened tape has reached the position shown in Fig. 2; at that point the leading face of the carton contacts a roller 50 carried by a pair of spring-urged convex arms 51 pivoted at 52. The tape is applied by roller 50, pressure rollers 52, and rollers 56 carried by arcuate arms 55. Instead of the rollers 35, 41 and the spring loaded arm 36, a pair of micro-switches may be mounted on one of the guide rails 81.
