Abstract
The finely-divided oxides of metals and metalloids having free -OH groups on the surface, especially silica, are treated in a substantially or completely anhydrous state with an alcohol vapour, preferably in a fluidized bed. Alcohols especially suitable are those which contain not more than 20 carbon atoms, e.g. methanol, n-butanol. Particularly stable products are obtained if alcohols capable of forming esters of low hydrolysis constant are used, e.g. partially esterified or etherified polyhydric alcohols, such as monoalkyl glycols, especially monomethyl glycol. A volatile esterification catalyst, preferably hydrogen chloride, may be present. The number of initial -OH groups present may be increased by treating the oxides with superheated steam. The products are very suitable for incorporation in, for example, rubber and other organic media. Mixed oxides may be treated in the same way.
