Abstract

Xylite esters of fatty acids containing 6-30 carbon atoms, said esters having at least two free hydroxyl groups per molecule, are prepared by heating 1 mole of xylite with about 0.5-1 moles of the appropriate fatty acid at 90-110 DEG C. for about 2 hours in the presence of an acidic catalyst and an atmosphere of an inert gas and in the absence of solvents. Certain mixtures of the esters are claimed per se. Several suitable acid catalysts are specified. Preferred fatty acids are lauric, palmitic, stearic and oleic acids. Examples are given.
