Abstract

796,602. Laminates. SCHAFFER, L. L. April 24, 1956 [April 26, 1955; July 8, 1955], Nos. 12061/55 and 19881/55. Class 140. [Also in Group XV] A decorative hardboard comprises a base la of matted cellulosic fibres having a thin layer 2 of thin wood flakes pressed into one or both faces so as to be integral with the base. The wood flakes may cover the base completely or may have small gaps between them through which the base is visible. The flakes or the base or both may be coated thinly with an adhesive such as urea-, melamine-, or phenolformaldehyde polyvinyl or polyacrylic resins, elastomers, or casein in liquid or powder form. The flakes in moist condition may be distributed from a hopper on to the mat of damp or semidry fibres, preliminarily pressed into the mat by a roller, and the flake-coated mat finally hotpressed, e.g. between polished metal cauls which may be treated with a silicone parting agent. The pH value of the fibrous mat is between 4 and 5 during formation of the board to avoid discolouration of the wood flakes, which may comprise a mixture of flakes from different woods contrasting in colours or texture. The flakes may be obtained by planing, slicing, peeling, or cutting. The cellulosic fibres may be of wood, bagasse, straw, or flax, and may be made into a mat by air-felting or water-felting.
