[Also in Group XXXIX] A phase-sensitive device comprises two saturable cores 46, 47 whose windings 49, 51 produce opposite effects on a device 52 to be controlled, the resetting windings 48, 50 carrying currents which are oppositely varied by a transistor 27 in accordance with the phase of the signal Es applied to its base. The transistor is biased so that in the no-signal condition, the resetting windings receive equal currents on alternate half-cycles, to set the cores to a point midway between the saturated and the unsaturated state. During the subsequent halfcycles the currents in the windings 49, 51 produce equal and opposite currents in the coils 53, 54 of the device 52. If an input signal is of such a phase that the transistor is made more conducting whilst winding 48 is receiving current, that winding receives additional resetting current, thereby increasing the effective permeability of the core 46 so that during the next half cycle the current fed to coil 53 is reduced. Similarly with this phasing the resetting current to winding 50 is reduced so permitting a larger current to be fed to the winding 54. If, however, the phase of the signal Es is reversed windings 48 and 50 receive decreased and increased currents respectively, whereby the currents in coils 53, 54 are increased and reduced respectively. The device 52 may be a differential relay or a magnetic amplifier.
