Abstract
796,219. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1956 [Dec. 20, 1955], No. 38372/56. Class 100(1) [Also in Groups XIX and XXXV] Sheets 18 of paper or like material which does not conduct electricity are fed in a linear path by means of a linear-motion motor device, by the provision on each sheet of at least one strip 20 of non-magnetic conducting material which forms an armature: when this armature is placed on a stationary magnetizable track bar 16 and beneath a stationary stator 11, and the stator is energized to produce a travelling magnetic field, the armature and attached sheet 18 is forced to travel in a linear path between the members 11, 16. In the example described, each sheet 18 is a record card which is to be fed through a statistical apparatus. There are two spaced strips 20 of copper, brass, tin, or aluminium secured on each card either as solid plates, or in the form of a grid structure having crosslegs such as 20a...20e. Each strip 20 is arranged on the card 18 in the direction in which the card is to be fed, and each strip overlies a track bar, such as 16, and is beneath a stator, such as 11. Each stator consists of a laminated magnetizable core slotted at 13 to receive windings 15 and provide teeth 14, and current is supplied to the windings, to produce the travelling magnetic field, by a two-pole single-phase motor. The stators and track bars extend the full length of the feed path of the sheets or cards.
