Abstract
1307833 Linear motors TRACKED HOVER- CRAFT Ltd 18 June 1970 [18 June 1969] 30925/69 Heading H2A In a linear induction motor, e.g. for propelling a gas-cushion vehicle along a track, the primary member 7, Fig. 2, which has a winding 9 located in slots therein, has a sheet member 10 covering the slot mouths and intermediate teeth and consisting of non-conductive and non-magnetic material but carrying magnetic material adjacent the teeth. As shown, two primary members 7 are located on opposite sides of a reaction rail 6 and each carries a sheet 10. The sheets may serve to restrain movement of the windings within the slots and alternatively or additionally act as expendable layers preventing direct contact between the primary members and the rail during operation of the motor. In this case they are readily replaceable. Suitable materials for the -sheets are natural or synthetic resin; P.V.C. or P.T.F.E. and the magnetic material may be barium ferrite particles carried in suspension in the sheets. The motor may be of the single-sided type in which case one primary member 7 is replaced by a fixed laminated core backing the reaction plate. Alternatively the motor may comprise a downwardly-directed E- shaped core facing a horizontal reaction rail, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the flux in this embodiment flowing transversely of the core.
