Abstract
<PICT:0796195/III/1> <PICT:0796195/III/2> In a method of carrying out processes in which gases, liquids and solids take part simultaneously, e.g. oxidizing sulphur dioxide to form sulphuric acid using active carbon as a catalyst, a suspension of a solid in a liquid in the form of a pumpable sludge having a solid content of at least 100 kg. per cubic metre is converted into discrete particles and held in the fluidized state above a grid 2 (Fig. 1) by a gas entering at 3 and leaving at 6 after passing through a cyclone separator 7 which returns entrained sludge to the fluidized suspension. Sludge collecting in the sump 4 is partly withdrawn at 9 and partly recirculated by the pump 5, fresh liquid may be added at 8. The solid content of the sludge is preferably kept so that the sludge is only just capable of being pumped and the gas load is adjusted to about 7000 cubic metres per hour per square metre of grid area. The free grid area at the narrowest points of the grid is about 10 per cent of the total grid area. In oxidation of sulphur dioxide a sludge of active carbon is formed in aqueous sulphuric acid and water is introduced at the point 8. The sulphuric acid may be separated from the sludge withdrawn from the apparatus by settling, centrifuging or filtration. In a modified apparatus the sludge is fluidized in a frusto-conical vessel 10 (Fig. 2) having a flared inlet piece 11 which is 1 metre in length for an apparatus through which 2 cubic metres of gas per second is passing. The length of the piece 11 is varied in accordance with the sixth root of the load. The gas speed in the inlet pipe 3 is between 20 and 40 metres per second.
