Abstract

796,142. Gravity-separation apparatus. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Aug. 22, 1955 [Aug. 23, 1954], No. 24074/55. Class 46. [Also in Group XXXVI] A mixture of sodium-amalgam, brine and chlorine from an electrolytic cell (not shown) (see Group XXXVI) enters a slot 46, Fig. 4, leading to a receiving compartment 38 separated by a partition 44 and trap 42 from an amalgam-washing compartment 40 in an endbox 12. A sufficient depth of amalgam to prevent exposure of the surface 48, which is metallic, to attack by the chlorine-containing brine is ensured by rubber blocks 66, 68, Fig. 6, which progressively reduce the width of the entering stream. Brine and chlorine pass out at 56, Fig. 3. Some brine is still present between a baffle 60 and the partition 44, and any chlorine carried along with it is vented together with mercury vapour through apertures 70, 72, in the partition 44 and end wall 73 respectively. The amalgam flows into the washing compartment 40, where any brine entrained with it is removed and diluted by water in the compartment, and the amalgam flows out through an outlet 50 provided with a sleeve 76 which may be raised or lowered to control the amalgam level in the entire box 12. Access to the compartment 40 for cleaning, and to the trap 42 for cleaning and removal of mercury butter, is gained by making a part 62 of the cover readily removable. Specification 796,143 [Group XXXVI] is referred to.
