Abstract

In the electrolysis of alkali metal salt solutions in an electrolysis vessel 1 using a mercury cathode, the alkali metal e.g. sodium amalgam formed is first separated from electrolyte and contaminants (amalgam butter) e.g. by passing through gas and mercury baffles 4 and 5 into outlet passage 6, then denuded in a denuding tower 7 to recover mercury which is separated from the caustic alkali e.g. soda and caused to flow e.g. by pump 9, after or prior to addition of wash water thereto e.g. from inlet 10, into a mercury return passageway 11 to pass under a baffle 12, thereby separating the mercury 16 from the mercury emulsion 17 (butter-like emulsion of mercury particles and graphite in water) and wash water 18, so that most of the mercury is recirculated e.g. via inlet passage 13 to the vessel 1, and the mercury emulsion and wash water and a minor part of the mercury flows over a weir 14 and is recirculated along an auxiliary passageway 15 to the denuding tower 7. A common side wall may be provided between the return passageway and electrolysis vessel, Figs.4 and 5 (not shown) for the passage therethrough of mercury, a weir and auxiliary passageway to the denuding tower being provided at the downflow end of the return passageway.
