Abstract

Fibrous glass material is sized or finished by applying thereto a solution obtained by adding an alkoxysilylpropylamine having the formula: <FORM:0795894/IV (b)/1> where R is an alkly group, R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group, and x and y are each 0, 1 or 2, to water or to aqueous organic mixtures. In solution, the silanes are converted to aminopropylpolysiloxanes. The treated glass fibres are particularly useful for the preparation of reinforced plastics, e.g. laminates.ALSO:The invention comprises alkoxysilylpropylamines of the formula <FORM:0795894/IV (a)/1> where R is an alkyl group, R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group, and x and y are each 0, 1 or 2. They are prepared by reacting ammonia with a gamma-chloropropylalkoxysilane at a temperature of at least 90 DEG C. and at superatmospheric pressure. The products are mixtures of mono-, bis- and tris-amines, the proportion of monoamine being greater with greater mol. fractions of ammonia in the reactants. The proportion of reactants may vary from about 1 to 20 mols. of ammonia per mol. of silane. The compounds are hydrolysable to siloxanes which form clear, stable solutions in water or in aqueous organic mixtures which are useful as sizes for fibrous glass material. The compounds may also be reacted with compounds containing methylol groups and the products subsequently hydrolysed. In the examples: (1) gamma - chloropropyltriethoxy silane (0.3 mols.) is heated with ammonia (3.0 mols.) at 100 DEG C. under autogenous pressure, and a fraction of the product is identified as mono-(triethoxysilylpropyl)amine; (2) the mono-, bis-and tris-(triethoxysilylpropyl)amines are identified after a similar reaction as in (1); (3) 50 per cent yield of the mono-amine is obtained using 20 mols. of liquid ammonia per mol. of silane; (4) the mono-amine is hydrolysed in water and the polysiloxane is obtained in glassy and in powder form, both of which form clear solutions in water. The Specification also discloses an aminopropylmethyl polysiloxane and a dimer of aminopropyldialkyl siloxane.
