Abstract
795,887. Powdered or liquid fuel burners. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. July 26, 1955 [July 26, 1954], No. 21595/55. Class 75(1) A combustion device for burning powdered or liquid fuels comprises a combustion chamber supplied with fuel and air from a centrally arranged pipe provided with means to impart a whirling motion to the fuel and air flowing therethrough, a chamber surrounding the pipe and having an inlet for secondary air and an annular outlet which is formed between the outlet opening of the chamber and the mouth piece of the fuel and air pipe and opens into the combustion chamber, at least a portion of the combustion chamber having an annular cross-section wider than the secondary air outlet and a constricted outlet so that a stationary eddy is formed in the annular portion of the combustion chamber from secondary air flowing back along the wall of the annular portion towards the annular outlet from the secondary air chamber. Coal dust or liquid fuel mixed with carrier air in a pipe 1 is mixed with air introduced tangentially at 2 in the burner head in a nozzle 14 and the mixture passes as a rotating conical spray into a chamber 3 where the mixture is burnt and issues as a burning mass through an opening 8. The chamber 3 provides an annular portion 4 in which an eddy 12 is created by the conical jet. The heavy particles of coal dust or oil drops are centrifuged into the portion 4 where they are partially burnt or reduced in size before issuing through the opening 8. Combustion air or liquid fuel is passed through a pipe 6 to a jacket 7 to cool the burner block 5. The burner block 5 may be made of a ceramic material. The pipe 1 is axially removable and interchangeable to suit different fuels. Incisions 11 are provided at the annular portion of the chamber 3 to carry away liquid slag formed when burning coal dust. Combustible dusts, liquid fuel or gases can be injected into the eddy 12 through an opening 13. The device may be provided with igniting means 9 and an inspection opening 10.
