Abstract

795,854. Seats. BRAUN, F. Nov. 21, 1956 [Dec. 23, 1955], No. 35595/56. Classes 52(1) and 52(2) A vehicle or aircraft seat has a back unit 1 hinged to a seat base 3 guided by a pivot 7 moving in a slideway 8, 8a attached to the base so that the base front lifts as it is displaced forwardly, the back 1 being guided, as it moves downwards, by a guide rail 10, 10a and pivot 2 moving therein, and a support 9 which retains the back and base in any adjusted position but is retracted by a movable weight 11 which is displaced relatively to the vehicle when the latter is subjected to a horizontal braking action sufficiently large for the inertia of the weight to overcome a spring 12 so that the seat base is lowered at the rear to become positioned to support the passenger against shock. Shock-absorbing springs 17 damp the movement of the base and back unit when support 9 is being withdrawn. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the weight 11 operates the prop 9 by means of a Bowden wire 24 and the movement is damped by springs 19, 20. The support 9 may also be retracted by the passenger by means of a push-button 33. In a further modification suitable for land vehicles where the shocks are usually horizontal only the weight 11 is connected to the upper part of the prop and moves in a guide 47.
