The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in seats particularly for motor vehicles of various types, such as pleasure cars and buses, but it will be understood, of course, that a seat in accordance with the present invention may be used for any purpose for which it may be found adapted and desirable.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a seat of the aforementioned character comprising connected seat and back portions which are yieldingly mounted for vertical movement in unison, thus promoting comfort as well as providing many other desirable qualities.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a novel construction and arrangement for yieldingly supporting the back portion of the seat.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a seat of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:-
The figure is a View in vertical longitudinal section through a seat constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a supporting structure which is designated generally by the reference numeral I, said supporting structure being stationary and including a horizontal frame 2 and a back 3, said frame 2 providing a compartment 4 for the reception of tools and other articles. Projecting forwardly from the back 3 are brackets 5 which include braces 6.
Resting on the frame 2 is a spring cushion I having a lifting handle 8 on its front. Mounted on the cushion l is a base 9 having hingedly connected to its rear, as at ll], an inclined back panel I I which substantially parallels the back 3 of the supporting structure I in spaced opposed relation thereto. Projecting rearwardly from the back panel II are brackets [2 which extend above the brackets 5 in spaced opposed relation, said brackets I2 including braces l3. Coil springs M are mounted between the brackets 5 and I2.
The reference numeral l5 designates generally a body conforming pad, said pad including a seat portion I6 which is supported on the base 9 and a back portion ll which is supported by the back panel II. A flap l8 extends from the top of the back portion ll of the pad l5 over the upper portion of the back 3 of the supporting structure I. Coil springs [9 are provided between the seat portion it of the pad l5 and the base 9 and between the back portion I! of said pad and the back panel ll. It will thus be seen that a construction and arrangement has been provided whereby the seat and the back portions are yieldingly supported for vertical movement in unison, thereby eliminating the usual rubbing of the occupants on the back as the vehicle passes over irregularities in the highway with consequent wrinkling and wearing of the clothes, as well as promoting comfort and rest in general. Of
course, the cushion l yieldingly supports the base.

Access to the compartment 4 may be conveniently had by simply grasping the handle 8 and swinging the cushion l, the base 9 and the seat portion it of the pad 55 upwardly substantially to the position indicated in dotted lines in the drawing. Of course, the hinge [0 permits this movement.
It is believed that the many advantages of a seat constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:-
l. A seat comprising a stationary supporting structure including a back portion, brackets mounted on said back portion, a base yieldingly mounted on the supporting structure, a panel hingedly mounted on the base and extending therefrom in spaced, opposed relation to the back portion of the supporting structure, brackets extending from the panel in spaced, opposed relation to the first named brackets, coil springs mounted between the first and second named brackets for yieldingly supporting the panel on the back portion of the supporting structure, and a pad including a seat portion yieldingly mounted on the base and a back portion yieldingly mounted on the panel.
2. A seat of the class described comprising a supporting structure including a substantially horizontal frame and a back portion, a plurality of vertically spaced brackets projecting forwardly from the back portion, the frame providing a tool compartment, a cushion resting on the frame, a base mounted on said cushion, a panel hingedly mounted on the rear of the base and extending therefrom in spaced, opposed relation to the back portion of the supporting structure, brackets projecting rearwardly from the panel in spaced, opposed relation above the first named 10 brackets, coil springs mounted between the first and the second named brackets for yieldingly supporting the panel on the back portion of the supporting structure for vertical movement in unison with the base, a pad including a seat portion mounted on the base and a back portion mounted on the panel, and coil springs interposed between the seat portion of the pad and the base and between the back portion of said pad and the panel.
