Abstract
1,243,831. Resiliently-mounted seats. K. G. NYSTROM. 15 Oct., 1968 [17 Oct., 1967; 23 Aug., 1968], No. 48902/68. Heading A4U. In a tractor seat which is counterbalanced by a tension spring 26, pulling down on the end of lever 24, the mechanical advantage of the lever, which is fulcrummed on a fixed pivot 30, is selfadjusting in accordance with the static weight of the seat occupant. Locks are provided to block the actions of tension springs 23 and 26, alternatively. Thus, spring 23 is normally blocked by the frictional engagement of tapered pivot head 30 with the edges of slot 29, while spring 26 is free to counterbalance the weight of the seat 16 and occupant. On raising latch 54, the blocking is reversed, through Bowden cable (53) turning lever 62 into the full-line position (to abut nose 61 and thereby block spring 26) and moving pivot 30 axially, to release the edges of slot 29. If the seat is unoccupied, spring 23 pulls lever 24 into the full-line position. On applying a load to the seat, lever 57 it tilted about the tip of lever 62, so that the parts move towards the dotted line position; the extent of movement depending on the extension of spring 23, which is required to counterbalance the load applied to the seat. On lowering latch 54, pivot 30 again grips the edges of slot 29 to block the action of spring 23 and lever 62 is retracted, to re-enable spring 26 to support the seat. In another form, levers (19, 20, Figs. 1-6, not shown) are mounted on an intermediate mounting plate (13) and replace lever 57, which is carried directly on the seat 16. In an alternative construction, a triangular plate (116, Figs. 9-12, not shown) replaces lever 24.
