Abstract
Unsaturated organic compounds are polymerized in the presence of accelerators comprising anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and a preformed complex of boron trifluoride with iron, cobalt or nickel fluorides. The metals are preferably in their low valency states. Specified unsaturated compounds are butadiene, isoprene, cyclopentadiene, cyclohexadiene, coumarone, indene, unsaturated aldehydes and ketones, ethylene, propylene which may contain inert materials such as propane or butane, 1-butene, 2-butene, isobutylene, pentenes, hexenes, styrene, methyl styrene, vinyl chloride, allyl chloride, acetylene and methyl acetylene. Mixtures, e.g. of propylene and butenes, isobutylene and butadiene, or coumarone and indene may be employed. The catalyst may be supported on porous inert materials, e.g. activated charcoal, or on metal fluorides, e.g. aluminium, calcium, strontium, barium and magnesium fluorides, or metal oxides. Polymerization may be carried out continuously or batchwise, preferably under sufficient pressure to keep the reactants in the liquid state and to avoid loss of boron trifluoride from the complex. Unreacted monomers and a portion of the polymer may be recycled. The hydrogen fluoride may be added continuously or intermittently, or dissolved in the monomer to form the catalyst in situ, and may be removed from the product by distillation or quenched with water and the product decanted and fractionated. Polymeric hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range having high anti-knock values may be obtained.
