Abstract

A lubricating composition, suitable for addition to a leaded gasoline to be employed as fuel for a two-stroke internal combustion engine, comprises a mineral lubricating oil, a minor proportion of an oil-soluble metal salt of an organic acid and a minor proportion of a halohydrocarbon having a vapour pressure of at least 0.1 mm. of mercury at 50 DEG C. The lubricating oil may be blended with a fatty oil (e.g. rapeseed or castor oil) or with a synthetic oil (e.g. a polymerized olefine or an ester such as dioctyl sebacate or trioctyl phosphate). The oil-soluble metal salt may be a sodium, lithium, calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, zinc, aluminium, tin, nickel or cobalt salt of a detergent-forming acid. Examples of such acids are C10-C13 fatty acids, wool fat acids, acids produced by the oxidation of paraffin wax, rosin acids, aromatic carboxylic acids (including aryl-substituted fatty acids and aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acids such as alkyl-substituted salicylic acids), diphenols (e.g. di(alkylphenol) sulphides and disulphides), condensation products of formaldehyde or acetaldehyde with alkyl-substituted phenols, sulphonic acids (e.g. sulphonated alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons or high boiling petroleum oils), sulphuric acid mono-esters and mono- and di-esters of phosphoric and thiophosphoric acids. The metal salts may be those described in Specifications 536,827 or 586,461 or they may be basic salts prepared as described in Specifications 739,434, 742,765, 780,058, 780,642, 790,473, 795,172 or 795,657. The halohydrocarbon may be ethylene dichloride or dibromide or mixtures of these, acetylene tetrabromide, 2,2,3-trichlorobutane, 2-chloro-2,3-dibromobutane, di-bromotoluene, 1,3 - dibromo - or 1,2,3 - tribromo - propane, 1,2 - dibromohexene - 1, trichlorobenzene or 2,4-dichlorotoluene. The leaded gasoline to which the lubricating composition is added may already contain a halohydrocarbon scavenger and the lead may be present as a tetra-alkyl lead such as tetraethyl lead, ethyl trimethyl lead, diethyl dimethyl lead, triethyl methyl lead or tetramethyl lead. Additional substances may be added to the lubricating composition or fuel/lubricant mixture, such as the unsaturated organic compounds described in Specifications 717,727 and 718,567 (particularly oleic acid, octadecene-1, octadecenylamine, alpha-pinene or cyclohexene), antioxidants (e.g. 2,4 - dimethyl - 6 - tert. butyl phenol, N,N1 - dibutyl - p - phenylene diamine or phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine), additives for preventing pre-ignition (e.g. tricresyl phosphate or tri-isopropyl phosphite) and antiicing additives (e.g. isopropanol, the monoethyl ether of diethylene glycol, or hexylene glycol). In the examples, a composition consisting of mineral lubricating oil, basic calcium salt of C14-C18 alykl salicylic acids, and ethylene dibromide and/or ethylene dichloride, with or without oleic acid, is added to a gasoline composition containing tetraethyl lead, ethylene dibromide and ethylene dichloride.
