Abstract

795,407. Cradles for cable drums. DALE ELECTRIC (YORKSHIRE), Ltd. Jan. 8,1957 [March 9, 1956], No. 7453/56. Class 99(2). A cradle for supporting cable reels or drums during reeling or unreeling of cables comprises spaced rollers 8, 10 carried by frame members 1 ... 4, and means for locking the roller 8 against rotation. As shown, the frame consists of U-section girders 1, 2 welded at their ends to cross-pieces 3, 4, the latter being shaped as a ramp. To allow adjustment of the roller 10 relatively to the roller 8, the axle 9 of the former engages slots 11 in the frame member 1 and recesses 13 in the frame member 2 ; the axle ends have opposed flats to prevent rotation, the rollers being provided with ball races at each end. The locking means comprises a bolt 14 extending through an L-shaped slot 15 in the side member 1 and held by a bracket 16. A spring 18 acting on the bracket and a collar 17 urges the bolt to the unlocked position when the bolt arm is in the horizontal leg of the slot 15. To lock the roller, the bolt 14 is pushed towards it, the bolt head 20 engaging an aperture 21 in the roller, and the bolt 14 is depressed through the vertical leg of slot 15 which locks it against releasing action of the spring. In use, the reel is rolled up the ramp 4 and on to rollers which have been adjusted to the desired spacing. Cable is reeled off, the drum rotating on the rollers, further rotation being halted by application of the locking device.
