A dishwashing machine controlled by an electric timing motor is characterized in that the timing motor is automatically stopped during the delivery of water, through metering means, to the machine and automatically restarted after the delivery of water. The machine is of known type e.g. having an impeller rotatable in the bottom of a wash tub to throw water upwardly over dishes therein, and the electric timing motor 1 operates cams (not shown) to open and close contacts 2, 3 and 4 to control the sequence of operations in known manner. The water metering means comprises a water supply valve 5 operated by a solenoid 7 and time delay means comprising an adjustable clockwork time lag mechanism 11 having an armature 17 and spring 13, and a time lag solenoid 15. When the solenoid 15 is energized the mechanism 11 is armed through the medium of a lever 16 pivoted at 19 and a switch 18 is closed. When the solenoid 7 is energized the valve 5 is opened and a switch 10 is also opened by a lever 9 pivoted at 9a. The lid or cover of the machine operates a switch 22. In operation the contacts 2 are closed, by a manual control handle which mechanically moves the cams, so that the motor 1 is energized, the contacts 2 remaining closed until the end of the sequence of operations. When the contacts 3 close the solenoid 15 is energized to arm the mechanism 11 and close the switch 18. When the contacts 3 again open and the contacts 4 close, the solenoid 15 is de-energized but the switch 18 is delayed in opening, by the mechanism 11. Thus the solenoid 7 is energized to open the valve 5 and open the switch 10 to stop the motor 1. Finally the switch 18 opens to de-energize the solenoid 7, so that the switch 10 closes and restarts the motor 1.
