Abstract

<PICT:0794995/III/1> Apparatus for forming a liquid, applied upon a sheet of rigid material, e.g. of metal, glass, wood or plastic, into an even, thin coating, comprises means for supporting the sheet, and an air doctor carried by travelling means which spaces it above the sheet, there being provided means for propelling the travelling means in the direction of one dimension of the sheet, and a track for guiding and supporting it so that the spacing of the air doctor above the sheet is maintained. The apparatus may be used for applying coatings of photo-sensitive material, in which case the air doctor may be provided with air-heating means so that it may be used to dry the coating, and a source of photographic activating rays may be mounted on the means carrying the air doctor, or similar means. As shown, the frame-ends 1 are connected by spaced rails 2, and the sheet 3, to be coated, is supported on brackets 4, a gutter 5 being provided at one end, and possible also at the sides, of the sheet. The wheels 6 of a trolley 7 run on the rails 2, an air doctor 8 being mounted adjustably for height and inclination, on the trolley, and connected by tubing 11 to a fan 10, a control damper 12 being provided. The trolley 7 may be traversed along the rails 2 by means of an electric motor 15 driving a pinion 17 which engages a rack 18. A tiltable trough 30 may be provided, pivotally supported on arms 31 on the trolley, by which the coating medium may be applied in advance of the air doctor 8, or it may be poured on manually. After the coating material has been applied, the air doctor 8 is traversed across the sheet to blow the excess into the gutter 5; the coating may then be dried by reducing the flow of air, heating it by means of heaters inside the air doctor, and repeatedly traversing the latter over the sheet. The application, exposure and development of photographic layers comprising metal diazo salts and polyvinyl acetate emulsions is described (see Group XX). Powdered photo-conductors in a resin binder may also be applied.
