In a sound recording and reproducing apparatus providing the combined alternatively or simultaneously usable functions of playing back tape carriers having sound grooves engageable by a reproducing head needle and recording and playing back magnetic sound tape carriers, and comprising a tape playing deck 2 including a groove indicating device 9 and mounted remote front said deck 2 a separate amplifier unit 15 incorporating a record/erase oscillator, there is provided under the deck 2 a directly mains-fed transformer 8 for energizing the groove indicating device dial lamp which transformer is pivotally or rockably mounted and can be fixed in a position in which occurs maximum compensation of the stray fields of the directly mains-fed parts of the apparatus together with a minimum of hum-inducing stray field from the transformer. Also mounted on the deck 2 are auxiliary apparatus 3 for recording or playing back magnetic sound tape carriers, a needle sound head 10 and a motor 7 which drives a roller 5 which in turn drives the tape carrier housed in a cassette 4; the head 10 and the magnetic sound head, not shown, can be placed separately or together against the tape which has either sound grooves or magnetic recording media or both. The power pack,. not shown, for the apparatus is a separate unit connected to it by a six-way line and contains a transformer, rectifier, condensers and resistors.
